Revert "substitute: Remove extra 'newline' call."

This reverts commit d5a1b0e86f248edd53c785b910b5d51ee708b0fc.

This change turned out to be misguided; it would lead to "substitute:"
lines being printed on the client side, without anything beyond the
colon sign.
