Use cpp instead of xrdb to avoid X problems. Note that xgrab does only work on 8 bit displays.

xgrab lets you grab arbitrary rectangular images from an X server and

writes them to files or commands (such as lpr) in a variety of
|
|
formats.
|
|
|
|
Xgrab does not work on 16 bit or 24 bit displays.
