When building on sparc64 (with base-gcc) the build fails with:
...
cc1: error: unrecognized command line option "-Wvla"
Switching it to ports-gcc fixes the build for sparc64

1.8.1 fixes some bugs from the 1.8 release; 1.8.2 is irrelevant for us but
might as well move to it since we need 1.8.1 anyway.
