ajacoutot a66a5dfaba Our pkg-config(1) supports '--variable var package' so bring over m4 
changes from newer GNU pkg-config to add PKG_CHECK_VAR.
Required by newer glib2.
Tested in a bulk.

jasper fcd76a0d99 sync pkg.m4 with pkg-config 0.27.1, which is also the version our pkg-config(1) 
claims to be.

landry 776b2a6ab4 Return an error code in case the AUTO{CONF,MAKE}_VERSION variable is not 
found in environment instead of failing silently. Bump metaauto to 1.0.

from Tobias Ulmer, ports failing with that diff (automake, cups, freetds,
tremor-tools) fixed by sthen@ and myself, 'go ahead' espie@

mbalmer e2a5894de9 Prepare for automake,aclocal behave like autoconf. the version number of the 
program to be used shall be indicated by an environment variable
AUTOMAKE_VERSION.  /usr/local/bin/{automake|aclocal} are not yet installed.
