third time's a charm
...
1) fixed symlinks in the distfile
2) chaged `pre-buid' to `pre-install'
3) allowed `mkdir ${PREFIX}' to fail gracefully
looks like a package will work now.

Add a cheesy "mkdir -p ${PREFIX}" as build target since most
...
systems won't have /compat/linux already created and the install
will fall right over.
